Though we do not say it that much, we want changes. They have a touch, a detail of newness, of risk, of restlessness. It appears like having it done supposes a small challenge in the midst of what is normal. And this is in different levels: from an innocent haircut to the newest model of eyeglasses and even to making a firm decision of not being angry for these changes. Without a doubt, these are important. Even more profound are those which demand from us a dosage of being realistic, of confidence and of freedom. We are not always aware that these changes are for the better until they make us uncertain and ask ourselves: Am I capable of doing what I propose? Is it not asking me too much? And excusing myself and say “I´d better remain as I am”? We are not going to deceit you. To decide that you make a change each day is tough. Tedious, yes. Impossible, no. I doubt that it is not impossible. The evangelist already wrote: “for God, nothing is impossible.” (Lk 1: 37).
This day marks the beginning of a special season: the lent. Lenten season is to stop and see the things that one has to change. It is not changing for the sake of changing. It is to acknowledge that which makes the “me” lesser and to be more like Jesus. That is the same thing as to change and believe in the Gospel. This is what is said as the priest imposes the ash on our foreheads. And why ash? It is not by chance: since time in memoriam, ash is already used by those who publicly announce that they want to change: to be reconciled with himself, with god and with others, to be converted and to be what they are really called to be. That is a simple gesture that reminds us of traditions and centuries of history. It is to impose on us the certainty that we can always change for the better, that we can always be more like the heart of God. Without extravagant ceremonies, without penitential shouts. But with the tenderness that the acknowledgment of being sinners gives and that we are in need of God to be able to continue journeying. And God, who knows us better more than we do, will make the miracle: to make us more like Him as he wishes. He, unlike any other actual coach, knows how to value those that are not-so-good in us so that they can be like Jesus little by little.
Dejarse hacer por Él.
Dejarnos convertir por Él.
Dejarnos parecer a Él.
¡Feliz cuaresma!
Allow yourself to be made by Him.
Let us allow ourselves to be changed by Him.
Let us allow ourselves to be like Him.
Do you welcome this change? Do you unite yourself in this act of looking what is within so that we can look at Him better? Do not forget that he is already looking at you to accompany you in your steps… a meaningful Lenten season!
